Fresh off the FA Cup third round, Liverpool's 1-0 home win over Everton, another Merseyside derby victory while also making it through to the next round. And to the delight of fans, it was Curtis Jones,18, who scored the winning goal for Liverpool.
The Reds had a big rotation, with Curtis Jones joining two other U20 youngsters to start the game, at one point struggling against the dominant Toffees. But Jones was active in the game, and in the 71st minute Origi carried the ball on the left side of the box with two full-backs on the side to defend the tiebreaker. The first thing Origi could see as he guarded the ball was Curtis Jones, who was on the line. Origi snapped the pass, and Jones adjusted the angle a little, firing before the defenders were in position.
The ball drew a beautiful curve, drilled into the goal from the top right corner, and Pickford, though trying to stretch his body to save, still couldn't touch the ball. Great britain's menpikford has done his best, and the angle of the ball is too tricky for an 18-year-old, but it's as good as some top-flight goals. After the break, Jones ran with his team-mates to celebrate his first goal in Liverpool's first team.
With that goal,18 years and 340 days Jones also became the second-year light-baller to break in the Merseyside derby after legendary goalscorer Fowler, who was only two days younger than Jones that year, and the Reds'next star is rising.
It was only Jones's fourth game for the Reds and he also completed his first-team debut at the FA Cup last season. He has been the best player on the pitch this season, having played twice in the League Cup against Milton Keynes. And against Arsenal, he scored the winning penalty for the Reds on penalties. Jones made his Premier League debut in the 76th minute when he switched to Robertson in the 16th round of the Premier League clash against Bournemouth on December 7. Jones will soon have his 19th birthday and with that goal his future will be even brighter.
